Cornick Lab

Iowa State University

Welcome to Nancy Cornick’s Laboratory

My research interests include: preharvest food safety, bacterial colonization mechanisms, zoonotic transmission of bacterial pathogens, pathogenesis of enteric E. coli diseases and the microbial ecology of gastrointestinal systems.  My lab is currently working on projects involving E. coli O157:H7 and other Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC). These bacteria cause gastrointestinal illness in humans and are usually acquired via contaminated food or water.  STEC are also constituents of the normal gastrointestinal flora of ruminants.  We use classical and molecular methods to address both the pathogenesis and ecology of STEC.
