Live bands will play equal numbers of waltzes, fox trots, swings, and Latin dances. As a semi-formal dance club, men should attend in either a tuxedo or business suite w/tie, and women in evening or cocktail wear. Annual dues (includes 7 dances) is $145/couple. SWING COMBO: Swing wkend dance & workshop, DSM (Fri-Su, Oct 17-19) ==== San Diego couple Joel and Alison Plys will be teaching several different swing forms including the Charleston, Balboa, Lindy, Shag, and Madison for a three day event, Friday thru Sunday, October 17-19. Friday begins with a welcome dance from 8-10pm at the West Des Moines Community Center located on 217 5th Street, in Valley Junction, West Des Moines IA. Saturday and Sunday morning-and-afternoon workshops are at the Des Moines Convention Complex. See ISU Ballroom Dance Club social (below) for further details. BIO: Dan and Amy Divine began ballroom dancing in California around 1995 and subsequently met in 2000. Initially Dan competed in both international standard and Latin, and Amy in international standard. Since competing together, however, their focus has been primarily in international standard. They've also done some pro-am work in American style and social ballroom dancing. They competed throughout the west coast, at Blackpool, and at the US Amateur Championships in 2002 where they took 5th place in Pre-Championship Standard and 25th in the US overall in the Open Championship. DINNER DANCE: Big Band Harvest Dance, Audubon (Sun; Oct 26) =========== Audubon Co Hospital Foundation is hosting their annual Big Band Dance, Sunday, October 26, from 6-10pm, in Agri Hall, 1652 Dove Ave, at the Audubon County Fairgrounds, Audubon, Iowa. Doors open at 5:30pm with a light buffet dinner at 6pm followed by three hours of live band dancing beginning at 7pm featuring the Wailing Big Band playing classics of the big-band era along with a mix of contemporary styles. Dress is casual nice to semi-formal. Our music is mostly big band with modern music used for the swing and fox trot. Singles are welcome, and you don't have to have a partner. Dress is casual; however, indoor-type shoes or socks must be worn on the studio floor. The practices are held on the ISU Campus in the Forker Building, studio 196 (Toman Studio), from 7:30-9:45pm on most Friday evenings during fall and spring semesters when ISU is in session. The exceptions to our weekly Friday meetings are listed below: Oct 31: Halloween dance party; treats without the tricks included. Usual time and place. Costumes optional, but encouraged.
