Undergraduate and post-degree students seeking teacher
licensure should
meet with Prof. Linda Quinn Allen (Pearson 304A)
to discuss required coursework and the sequence in which you should
take the courses. You must meet requirements in three areas:
A. General Education
B. Content Area
C. Professional Teacher Education
All of the following courses are required for professional teacher
education:
- CI 201 Instructional Technology (3 credits)
- CI 204 Social Foundations of American Education (3 credits)
- CI 280L Pre-Student Teaching Experience (1/2 credit)
Prerequisite for admission to Teacher Education Program
- CI 280A Pre-Student Teaching Experience (2 credits)
Taken after being admitted to Teacher Education Program
- CI 333 Educational Psychology (3 credits)
Prerequisites CI 201, Psych 230 or HD FS 102
- CI 406 Multicultural Awareness and Nonsexism in the Classroom (3credits)
Prerequisites CI 201, CI 333, junior classification, admission
to teacher education program
- CI 426 Principles and Issues of Secondary Education (3 credits)
Prerequisites CI 201, senior classification, full admission
to teacher education program,,
concurrent enrollment in CI 415
- CI 415 Senior Seminar (R)
Prerequisites CI 201, senior classification, full admission
to teacher education program,,
concurrent enrollment in CI 426
- F Lng 487 Methods in Secondary School Foreign Language Instruction
(3credits)
To be taken the semester immediately preceding student teaching
Beginning fall 2003 the course will be offered in the fall semester
only.
- LAS 417G Student Teaching (12 weeks - 12 credits)
All professional teacher education coursework must be completed
before doing student teaching. No courses may be taken -
in any area - while student teaching
Prerequisites to Admission to Teacher Education Program
- Earned GPA of at least 2.5
- ACT composite of 19 or above OR SAT I composite of 910
OR high school rank above the 49th percentile
- AND Praxis I (PPST) composite of 522 with no single score
(reading, math, or writing) below 170 (For information on the dates and
fees for the Praxis I, go to Education Student Services, E105 Lagomarcino.)
- Completion of CI 280L (1/2 credit) to meet the required 10 hours
of field experience
Application to the Teacher Education Program
Upon completion of the prerequisites listed above,
see Prof. Linda Quinn Allen (Pearson 304A) for an application
form.
You may apply for admission to the Teacher Education
Program as early as four semesters before the semester you plan
to student teach, if you have met all of the requirements. You
must be fully admitted into the program by mid-semester prior to
the semester you plan to student teach.
Application for Student Teaching
See Prof. Linda Quinn Allen (Pearson 304A) for
application information. If you have followed the appropriate
sequence of courses, you will apply for student teaching during
the semester you are enrolled in F Lng 487. If for some reason you
do not plan on student teaching the semester immediately after you
have completed F Lng 487, you must meet with Prof. Allen during the
first month of the semester
before you plan to student teach.
All Students Applying for Licensure with a Foreign Language as the First
Endorsment Are Required To:
- Take the ACTFL OPI (Oral Proficiency Interview)
- Compile a professional portfolio that demonstrates evidence of meeting
teacher education performance standards
Post-Degree Students
You must meet the following requirements:
- Meet current admission requirements in the Teacher Education Program
- Hold at least a bachelor's degree from an institution accredited by its
regional association and a minimum GPA of 2.5 from that institution
- Meet minimum scores for Praxis I (Math - 170, Reading - 172, Writing -
172),
OR composite of 910 GRE with subscores no lower than 400 on
the Verbal test and 400 on the Quantitative test
- Complete a minimum of 10 hours of ISU approved pre-student teaching experience
prior to admission to Teacher Education
- Complete a minimum of 40 hours of ISU approved pre-student teaching experience
after admission to Teacher Education
- Complete student teaching at ISU
- Complete the required course work for a major in the language in which
you are seeking an endorsement (unless your B.A. is in the language)
- Complete professional education requirements by course work or examination
- Meet general education requirements for licensure
- Earn, in residence, a minimum of 20 semester credits with a minimum GPA
of 2.5 on all ISU coursework
Second Endorsement
If you already hold an Iowa state teacher's license
and want to add a foreign language endorsement:
- Complete at least 25 credit hours in the language
you plan to teach
- Complete F Lng 487
- If you are seeking an endorsement in French, German,
Russian, or Spanish, 9 of the 25 credit hours must be
at the 300 level or above with 6 of the credits in composition
and conversation.
- If you are seeking an endorsement in Latin, 10 credits
must be at the 300 or 400 level and Hist 403 (Cl St
403) is required
- If you are seeking an endorsement in Greek or Portuguese
9 of the 25 hours must be at the 300 level or above and
History 402 is required.
If you are seeking a K-6 foreign language endorsement,
you must complete the following courses:
- FLng/CI/Ling 486 Methods in Foreign Language Instruction
Elementary School (3 credits)
- HDFS 226 Development and Guidance in Middle Childhood
(3 credits)
- CI 468E Supervised Practicum in Teaching Foreign
Language (1 credit)
- CI 416C Supervised Student Teaching in Foreign Language
(8 credits)
