Con E 380: ENGINEERING LAW Fall 2008

Instructor Information

Course Information

1. Here are some notes describing how to find and cite judicial opinions, and specifying some opinions of the Iowa Supreme Court that we will discuss this semester.

2. A reminder: class on Thursday, August 28, will be cancelled. We will make this class up later in the semester, either as one extra class or two extra half-classes. Please take advantage of some of the extra time by getting acquainted with WESTLAW and using it to find the Garling Construction case that is cited in the notes that are linked in paragraph 1, above.

3.  By the end of class on September 4, I hope to have covered material that corresponds to pages 22-28 and 42-50 of the text. Please read these pages, skimming lightly over any material not discussed in class. You may also wish to read pages 52-55 ("The Engineer as Expert Witness") which can, I think, be safely assigned as do-it-yourself reading (but of course feel free to ask questions about this material if you have any).

4. If you are thinking about going to law school, or are at all interested in reading about what law school is like, I recommend the book One-L by Scott Turow. Turow is a lawyer who went on to fame and fortune writing best-sellers like Presumed Innocent, but before he did that he wrote this very readable and entertaining book describing his first year at Harvard Law. You may also wish to watch the movie The Paper Chase (available, last I checked, at the Ames Public Library), a somewhat more fictionalized account of a person's first year at Harvard Law School; the performance by John Houseman as the famous Prof Kingsfield is brilliant.

5. Exam reminder: the first test of the semester will be on Thursday, October 9. This is the first test from last semester.

6. I hope nobody was seriously inconvenienced as a result of the unplanned cancellation of class on Thursday the 17th. Class will resume as scheduled on Tuesday the 23rd.
