Stat 226 Q&A:
Q: Where do I download JMP?
A: http://www.stat.iastate.edu/resources/software/jmp/ Also, email jmphelp@iastate.edu if you have problems installing JMP. You can also check out some of my old JMP instructional videos at http://www.public.iastate.edu/~jdabbey/Stat401/jmp.html. All of this information is available on my main website.
Q: Should I install JMP early or wait until the night before the HW is due?
A: Install JMP as soon as possible (how about now!).
Q: Why won't JMP work on my computer?
A: Seek help from jmphelp@iastate.edu.
Q: Where can I find my grades?
A: Grades will be posted on WebCT http://www.celt.iastate.edu/webct/
Q: When will you inform me of the grade curve?
A: Never. By department policy, I am not allowed to divulge curve information at any time. The only time a curve can even apply is at the end of the semester after we complete the entire course.
Q: When will homeworks be available?
A: The day before the HW is assigned. Many of the homeworks change from semester to semester. Hence, the homeworks may not be distributed until well into the semester.
Q: Can I get a friend into section D?
A: No. Unless people drop from section D, we will have no more space for new students.
Q: Can the final exam time be changed?
A: No. The university sets the final schedule.
Q: What textbook(s) do I need for this course?
A: See the syllabus (when I post the new version). You may also want the student solutions manual.
Q: Can I retake quizzes?
A: No. However, I do throw out two quizzes as noted on the syllabus.
Q: Do I really need to attend class?
A: Yes. My notes may provide a large portion of the overall content. However, being in class will aid in retention and comprehension. Further, you may notice areas of emphasis and/or receive hints.
Q: Why did I miss X points on HW#?
A: That's the TA's job. If you have point questions for a homework, you MUST see the TA first. If you have substantive questions (e.g., why did you use the Wilson's Proportion estimator?), then you can come directly to me.
Q: Can I work on a team for my homeworks?
A: The answer is yes. HOWEVER, you must turn in your own, individual work. You must also hand-write your work. Further, if you do homeworks by "committee", I strongly recommend that you try to do the entire homework on your own first. Why? Because you do not take tests as committees!
