RE: Special Topics in High Performance Computing, Fall 2004

Those who require high performance computers for their research should be able to write efficient parallel scientific programs for both shared memory parallel computers using OpenMP as well as for distributed memory parallel computers using MPI.

I will be offering a 3-credit course this fall whose primary focus will be the writing of efficient parallel scientific programs for shared memory high performance parallel computers. Specifically, lectures will be presented on the following topics: Lectures will be presented from the following areas:

  1. using OpenMP for shared memory parallelization
  2. using data distribution directives to enhance parallel performance for virtual shared memory parallel computers
  3. using performance tools to assess parallel performance
  4. optimizing serial as well as parallel performance
  5. using both OpenMP and MPI for clusters of SMPs, if time permits.
Instead of participating the the above lectures, students are welcome to select an HPC topic of personal interest and present the results to the class sometime during the semester.

The course will be taught informally. Students will be expected to present results of assignments to the class instead of handing them in to be graded. Please contact me if you have any questions.
