Breton Lais
Lais were originally songs
sung to harp accompaniment, more lyrical than narrative, sometimes accompanied
by a narrative story about which the lais were sung. Some lais,
like Sir Orfeo, seem to have derived from and now present these stories.
Most lais feature
- short, rapid exposition;
- a chivalric theme (frequently);
- a romantic quality; and
- the involvement of the supernatural.
