Brief Calculus: Solving Problems in Business, Economics, and the Social and Behavioral Sciences, second edition, by Bill Armstrong and Don Davis.

Prerequisites:

Satisfactory performance on placement exam, 2 years of high school algebra, 1 year of geometry.

Course Topics:

Here is a tentative outline of the topics.  Some of the sections may not be covered.

  • Chapter 1: Functions, Models, and Average Rate of Change
  • Chapter 2: Limits, Instantaneous Rate of Change, and the Derivative
  • Chapter 3: Applications of the Derivative
  • Chapter 4: Additional Differentiation Techniques
  • Chapter 5: Further Applications of the Derivative
  • Chapter 6: Integral Calculus
  • Chapter 7: Applications of Integral Calculus
  • Chapter 8: Calculus of Several Variables

Help room:

The Mathematics Department runs a help room that is free to all students. The Help Room is in 385 Carver,  MTWR 9-4, F 9-3

Exams:

Exam #1:  First in-class exam:  Thursday, September 20 (Tentative).
Exam #2:  Second in-class exam (Midterm): Sometime in the middle of October.
Exam #3:  Third in-class exam: Sometime before Friday, November 16 (last day of class before Thanksgiving Break).  
Exam #4:  Final exam:  Sometime between Monday, December 10 and Friday, December 14 (finals week).
