Individual and Cultural Differences

Subtle differences between cultural or subcultural traditions can be an intriguing and important part of artistic study and influence. The three masks shown are all created by Original peoples of North America. Each is both functional and decorative and created to be used in specific contexts within their culture of origin.

 Snow goggles Eskimos created to protect eyes from effects of blizzards.

Great Doctor masks created by Iroquois, worn by healers are always red (day) and black (night).

Northwest coast mask created by Tungit tribe. Heraldic crest represents social status, bear clan and family position.
