Held a variety of increasingly responsible positions as contract and grant writer with the ISU proposals and grants office, editor for the ISU Home Economics and Agricultural Experiment Station, assistant editor of the American Journal of Botany, and assistant editor and then marketing director for the Council for Agricultural Science and Technology.
