Presentations made at schools and other organizations or to visiting groups

Science Bound program of ISU (2008). As a faculty volunteer for this program to increase the involvement of disadvantaged and/or underrepresented students in science, I organized presentations by three graduate students from underrepresented groups regarding their reasons for choosing a scientific career, led a discussion on careers in science, and provided a hands-on activity in plant pathology and hypothesis testing for central Iowa eighth graders. Participation: 26 students, 5 teachers, administrators, and adult mentors.

Plants Get Sick Too (2001-2005). I developed and have conducted yearly this program for Science Night at Roosevelt Elementary School, Ames, IA. The program consists of demonstrations and activities for students and their families focusing on hypothesis testing and plant pathology. Participation: 80-100.

Science Bound program of ISU (2004). As a faculty volunteer for this program to increase the involvement of disadvantaged and/or underrepresented students in science, I organized presentations by two graduate students and a postdoctoral researcher of color regarding reasons for choosing a scientific career, led a general discussion on being a scientist, and provided a hands-on exercise in plant pathology for central Iowa high school freshmen. Participation: 24.

ISU College of Ag High School Student Workshop (Science in Ag Day), "Biosecurity InvestigationsÓ (2003). With another faculty member, I conducted an hour-long introduction to crop biosecurity for central Iowa high school seniors. Participation: 20.

Research internship programs
Scinece with Practive (AgEd 490) (2005-present). I mentor undergraduate participants in this program, which focuses on education and training through hourly employment.  Students gain experience and training as research assistants in my lab
NSF Research Experience for Teachers, A. Leshem-Ackerman and J. Wendel, ISU, PIs (2003, 2005, 2006). I host interns in this summer program to provide research experience and resources for curriculum development for junior and senior high school teachers.

Romania Young Scientist to Scientist Program, ISU (2004). I hosted a young Romanian scientist for a one month research experience in my laboratory as part of this international outreach program funded by USAID and USDA and administered by the ISU Global Agricultural Programs Office.

NSF Research Experience for High School Students, A. Leshem-Ackerman and J. Wendel, ISU, PIs (2004). I hosted a high school student for a semester-long internship in my laboratory as part of this outreach program to expose students early to research in the life sciences.
NSF Research Experience for Undergraduates, D. Oliver, ISU, PI (2002, 2004). I hosted an undergraduate student each year for a summer research internship as part of this outreach program that recruits largely from 1890 institutions.
Program for Women in Science and Engineering, summer research internships (2002, 2003). I hosted one undergaduate woman each year for a summer research internship as part of this program to increase the participation of women in the sciences.
